Courgettes

Courgettes cut straight from the plant and eaten while still juicy and crunchy will convert wavering courgette enthusiasts. Eaten like this or freshly grilled slices they are a far cry from the limp uninspiring supermarket version.

Sown under glass in April and transplanted outside in late May or early June after the worst of the frosts in a rich, well manured soil. Courgettes are bush plants and need plenty of space. Pick when 10-15cm long to ensure a constant supply. Water regularly in dry weather. An early or late crop will do well in an unheated green house.

Partenon is a unique variety which can pollinate itself and so produce fruit early in the season and in cool weather, like the weather in West Yorkshire! This also makes it ideal for growing under cloches . It provides beautiful glossy dark green fruits.

If you find yourself with an excess of courgettes flowers. Gather them when very fresh, just as the flowers are about to open, make a seasoned batter with chick pea flour, dip in the flowers and deep fry briefly till crisp - delicious!
