Pundles Farm lays at an altitude of about 1,000 feet. The
temperature is almost always 1-2 oC cooler than the
neighbouring town of Halifax down in the valley or City of
Bradford to the east. The land is
exposed to the prevailing west winds that come down from Ovenden
Moor which we hope will average speeds of 5 m/s to make us
self-sufficient in electricity. The gardens around Pundles have, for the most part, been
cultivated from land that had previously only been used for
grazing. The approach has been to adopt organic principles of
cultivation from the start. The gardens are small scale but
produce sufficient for a family of five for much of the year.
The aim is to increase the spread of crops over the year. The
Garden Year is a record of our
approach.
The main vegetable garden is not large, but comprises four
plots about 12' by 10' that are rotated in the traditional
manner. In addition seven raised beds provide for salad crops,
beans, courgettes, asparagus, globe artichokes and strawberries.
There is a fruit cage roughly 24' by 20' for raspberries,
blackcurrants and gooseberries.
There is a plentiful supply of nettles. These are put to good
use as a nettle liquid feed for
most plants.
The recipes throughout these pages aim to have a direct
link to what we produce, but is sometimes included
simply because its a favourite!
